WWE star Carmella believes she has to work “twice as hard” because of her “pretty” face.
During an appearance on her fiancé’s “After the Bell with Corey Graves” podcast, Carmella (née Leah Van Dale) was asked about NXT 2.0 star Mandy Rose’s recent comments about wanting more “respect” for her work, rather than her looks.
“Good luck, because when you’re pretty, that doesn’t happen,” Carmella said, admitting the situation “fires me up” because her colleague is a talented wrestler.
“When I got signed in NXT, I remember Bill DeMott said, ‘You’re going to have to work twice as hard as everyone else because you’re pretty,’” Carmella recalled.
DeMott is a former WWE wrestler, agent and trainer, who resigned from the organization in 2015 over allegations of misconduct.
“I remember being like, ‘What? That’s crazy,’” Carmella said about her past conversation with DeMott.
“‘You’re going to have to work twice as hard because people aren’t going to respect you because of how you look’. And it just blew my mind, and I remembered thinking, ‘Okay, noted and challenge accepted’. That’s what I did.”
Carmella’s most recent wrestling gimmick has played off her looks as she has declared herself “The Most Beautiful Woman in all of WWE” during backstage appearances and matches.
“No matter what, I’m never going to get the respect that I deserve because of how I look and that’s just how it is.” Carmella said. “If I didn’t look like this and I had the same matches and same career, people would be like ‘Carmella is amazing, we love her.’ Because I look how I do, I’m not going to get the respect that I deserve.”
Carmella announced her engagement with Graves over the weekend on social media. She posted a black and white PDA photo in Graves’ arms, while she showed off her pear-cut diamond ring.
The couple, whose relationship has been documented on “Total Divas,” has been dating since 2019.
Carmella recently moved from WWE Smackdown to Raw.
